Samuel Macdonald

Music | Lyrics | Orchestration | Musical Direction

Samuel Macdonald is a Musical Director, Composer, and Lyricist working in theatre and film in the UK

I recently graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with a Masters in Musical Directing for Musical Theatre. Whilst studying, I worked as musical director of Edges (Pasek and Paul), BA and MA showcase presentations, and a number of newly written cabarets, for which they also arranged the music. I was also Assistant Musical Director and Pianist for Merrily We Roll Along, directed by Louise Shepherd, with Jordan Li-Smith as Musical Director.

I recently composed and produced music for a production of Chris Bush’s Faustus: That Damned Woman, directed by Becky Hope-Palmer, and I write music and lyrics for musicals with my collaborator Mairead Dunsmore.

In my writing, arranging and musical directing, I am comfortable across a wide variety of styles and idioms, whether that be producing high-quality pop tracks, orchestrating for large and small ensembles, or improvising jazz piano.

“Sam Macdonald deserves congratulation for the soundtrack…his “No Feet” score successfully captures the tension and simultaneous inevitability of Bilal’s climactic decision.”
